Viz Media gets new manga under “Shonen Jump” and Shonen Jump Advanced” labels

With alot of Viz Media’s Shonen Jump manga finishing soon, (Prince of Tennis, Shaman King, Eyeshield 21, Hikaru no Go, ) Viz decided that it needed some new blood. So, Viz got some new manga.

The first is Psyren. Psyren is a supernatural manga series written and illustrated by Toshiaki Iwashiro. It started in Japan in Weekly Shonen Jump in 2007, but due to low popularity, was cancelled in 2010 and currently has 14 volumes, and will soon have up to an estimated 17 volumes. Viz will publish the first volume in 2011.

The second is Yu-Gi-Oh 5D’s. 5D’s is a fantasy manga series written and illustrated by Masashi Satou. It began serializing in V-Jump in August 2009, and is still running with one volume. It is based on the anime series of the same name, which is a spin-off from the original Yu-Gi-Oh Duelist anime.

The anime is animated by Studio Gallop (Yu-Gi-Oh, Initial D) and directed by Katsumi Ono. The anime series started in Japan on April 2008, and is still going with 138 episodes. The anime was licensed by 4Kids. Viz has no date yet for volume 1 of the manga.

The third is Nura: Rise of the Yokai Clan. Nura is a supernatural manga series written and illustrated by Hiroshi Shiibashi. It began serializing in Weekly Shonen Jump on March 2008, and is still going with 13 volumes. An anime adaption started on July 2010, and is still going with 25 epsiodes. 1. So the reason why Psyren ended at chapter 145 was due to low demand?

    • Yup. I’m not sure if this is how it is for all manga magazines, but in Weekly Shonen Jump, they have a popularity poll each week, and if a manga is consistently low on the poll, it will get cancelled eventually if it doesn’t rise on the list. There is a website that lists the rankings each week, but I don’t know which site myself.

      • Aww, that’s a horrible way of deciding which mangas to remove. I actually enjoy Psyren… I’m gonna mjiss it. T_T

      • Well, on the bright side, it always possible that it will get an anime adaption. Believe it or not, even manga that are cancelled get anime adaptions, most notably Buso Renkin.

      • Ooh, I hope it gets turn into an anime then. But wouldn’t it be a while before anything like that might possibly happen?

      • Well, it depends on the demand on an anime. For example, one manga, Level E (from the author of Hunter X Hunter and YuYu Hakusho) finished back in 1997. And an anime adaption is starting in 2011; over ten years after the manga finished. But some anime can starts as soon as only two years after the manga is finished, so it varies.
