ScyFy to air Chrono Crusade!

Posted in anime with tags , , , , , , , , , on January 23, 2011 by Pirate

Starting February 22, ScyFy Channel will air two episodes of the 2003 anime every Tuesday night on ScyFy’s anime block, Ani-Monday (now jokingly called Ani-Tuesday when it moved from Monday nights to Tuesday nights). The two episodes will air at 11:00 and 11:30 PM, follows by repeats of Gurren Lagann. This will be the first FUNimation anime to air on ScyFy.

The anime is based on a manga by Daisuke Moriyama (World Embryo), which ran in Dragon Age from November 1998 to June 2004 with 8 volumes. The anime series, which was animated by Gonzo (Vandread, Gate Keepers, Gantz) and directed by Yuu Kou (Giant Killing, Loveless), ran in Japan on Fuji TV from November 2003 to June 2004 with 24 episodes.

In North America, the manga was licensed by ADV Manga, and the anime was previously licensed by ADV Films, but then rescued by FUNimation. In 2006, it aired on Showtime Beyond. The anime and manga follows an organization who hunt demons.

Other anime previously aired on Ani-Monday include Dead Leaves, Appleseed, Descendants of Darkness, El-Hazard, Galaxy Express 999, Ghost in the Shell, Kai Doh Maru, Monster, Mobile Suit Gundam 00, Macross Plus, Ninja Scroll, Rave Master, Tokko, and X.

xxxHolic manga to end in Japan this February

Posted in manga with tags , , , , , , on January 14, 2011 by Pirate

xxxHolic fans were kinda sad (but mostly happy) when CLAMP announced that their dark supernatural manga series will end this February.

xxxHolic is about a high-school student who has the ability to see spirits, which irks him, so he makes a deal with a mysterious lady to remove this power, but he had no idea what he was getting into when he made this bargain!

xxxHolic began February 2003 in the weekly manga magazine Young Magazine, and was created by mangaka group CLAMP (Cardcaptor Sakura, Tsubasa Chronicle, Clover). In 2010, the manga moved to Bessatsu Shonen Magazine, where it will finish its run next month. The manga currently has 18 volumes, and will have an estimated 19 or 20 volumes after it finishes.

xxxHolic was adapted into an anime movie in 2005 titled xxxHolic: A Midsummer Night’s Dream. It was animated by Production I.G. (Dead Leaves, Blood: The Last Vampire, Patlabor: the Movie) and directed by Tsutomu Mizushima (Big Windup!). In 2006, it was adapted into a anime series that ran from April to September 2006 with 24 episodes. It was also animated by Production I.G. and directed by Tsutomu Mizushima. In 2008, a second anime series, xxxHolic: Kei, ran on TBS from April to June 2008 with 13 episodes. Than, in February 2009, an OVA, xxxHolic: Shunmuki, was released with 2 episodes. Than, in April 2010, a second OVA, xxxHolic: Ro, was released. A final OVA, xxxHolic: Ro Adayume, will be released this March. All of the above anime are animated by Production I.G. and directed by Tsutomu Mizushima.

In North America, the manga is licensed by Del Rey, who have recently released 16, and the film and first anime series are licensed by FUNimation. The second anime series, and the OVAs are currently unlicensed.

Sengoku Basara film to open June 2011!

Posted in anime, Video Games with tags , , , , , , , , , on January 4, 2011 by Pirate

The as-of-now unnamed Sengoku Basara anime film will open in Japanese theaters on June 4, 2011. The anime film is based on the anime series Sengoku Basara, which is in turn based on the video game series of the same name.

The video game series is published by Capcom, with the first game being released in Japan and North America in 2005 for Playstation 2. In America, the game received controversy due to a not-so-great dub, including the name, which was changed from Sengoku Basara to Devil Kings. The series is a fantasy beat ’em up.

The second game, Sengoku Basara 2, was released in 2006 for the Playstation 2 and Nintendo Wii. The game was never released in North America. The third game, Sengoku Basara 3, (Sengoku Basara: Samurai Heroes in North America) was released in 2010 for the Playstation 3 and Nintendo Wii.

The first anime series, Sengoku Basara: Samurai Kings, aired in Japan from April 2009 to June 2009 with 13 episodes. It was animated by Production I.G. (Ghost in the Shell, Blood+, Moribito) and directed by Itsuro Kawasaki (Arc the Lad, Chrono Trigger). The second series, Sengoku Basara II, aired in Japan from July to September 2010 with 12 episodes. The series was also animated by Production I.G., but this time was directed by Kazuya Nomura.

The upcoming film will also be animated by Production I.G.,  and will be also directed by Kazuya Nomura. The franchise follows various generals in the Sengoku Period as they go into war.

In North America, FUNimation has licensed both anime series, and is expected to license the film, too.

Final volume of Shaman King to be released in USA January 2011!

Posted in manga with tags , , , , , , , , , on December 29, 2010 by Pirate

Well, fans of Shaman King, the end is almost here. After almost 10 years of being released in America, volume 32, the final volume, will be released in North America in January 4, 2011 by Viz Media under their Shonen Jump label. Viz had licensed the manga back in 2002, and had relased the first volume in September 3, 2003. The series follows the adventures of Yoh Asakura, a boy who can see and interact with ghosts due to his Shamanic powers.

In Japan, the series ran in Weekly Shonen Jump from 1998 untill it was canceled in 2004 with 32 volumes. However, since the ending was very abrupt, later the series was re-released and got an alternate ending (Which I hope Viz licenses). The series was written and illustrated by Hiroyuki Takei (Ultimo, Jumbor).

The series got an anime adaption that ran in Japan from 2001 to 2003 with 64 episodes. The series was animated by Xebec (Buso Renkin, Dai-Guard, To-Love-Ru) and directed by Seiji Mizushima (Fullmetal Alchemist, Gundam 00). It was licensed in North America by 4Kids, and aired on the FoxBox from 2003 to 2005. FUNimation and 4Kids teamed up to give it an uncut DVD release, but it was canceled after only three volumes. Shaman King has also gotten novels and video games.

Anyway, I have been reading Shaman King for awhile, so this news excites but also saddens me. I really hope Viz licenses the “True ending”. And now that I think of it, I still need to read Ultimo…

FUNimation to re-release YuYu Hakusho on Blu-Ray in 2011.

Posted in anime with tags , , , , , , , on December 12, 2010 by Pirate

Yes, you heard right. After almost a decade, one of FUNi’s first anime series will be getting a Blu-Ray release in season box sets. The first set will be released on March 2011, according to Right Stuf. About time, I say. I may have to finally buy the anime, since I really enjoyed the manga.

Yu Yu Hakusho is based on a manga series written and illustrated by Yoshihiro Togashi (Hunter X Hunter, Level E) and was serialized in Weekly Shonen Jump from 1990 to 1994 and made 19 volumes, which Viz Media published under their Shonen Jump line-up. To this day, YuYu Hakusho remains known as one of the best Shonen Jump manga around.

The anime series ran from 1992 to 1995, and made 112 episodes. The series was animated by Studio Pierrot (Naruto, Bleach) and directed by Noriyuki Abe (Bleach, Flame of Recca). The anime, which was very popular, spawned two OVA from 1994 to 1996, and two films. The first was released in 1993, and the second in 1994. FUNimation has licensed the anime series, but the films were licensed by another company.

The series has also gotten novels, video games, CD’s, and art books.
