Well, fans of Shaman King, the end is almost here. After almost 10 years of being released in America, volume 32, the final volume, will be released in North America in January 4, 2011 by Viz Media under their Shonen Jump label. Viz had licensed the manga back in 2002, and had relased the first volume in September 3, 2003. The series follows the adventures of Yoh Asakura, a boy who can see and interact with ghosts due to his Shamanic powers.

In Japan, the series ran in Weekly Shonen Jump from 1998 untill it was canceled in 2004 with 32 volumes. However, since the ending was very abrupt, later the series was re-released and got an alternate ending (Which I hope Viz licenses). The series was written and illustrated by Hiroyuki Takei (Ultimo, Jumbor).

The series got an anime adaption that ran in Japan from 2001 to 2003 with 64 episodes. The series was animated by Xebec (Buso Renkin, Dai-Guard, To-Love-Ru) and directed by Seiji Mizushima (Fullmetal Alchemist, Gundam 00). It was licensed in North America by 4Kids, and aired on the FoxBox from 2003 to 2005. FUNimation and 4Kids teamed up to give it an uncut DVD release, but it was canceled after only three volumes. Shaman King has also gotten novels and video games.

Anyway, I have been reading Shaman King for awhile, so this news excites but also saddens me. I really hope Viz licenses the “True ending”. And now that I think of it, I still need to read Ultimo…
