MAR (Which is short for MarchenĀ  Awakens Romance) will stream on VizAnime (Viz Media’s official online streaming service) and Hulu starting January 17th.

MAR is based on the fantasy adventure manga series by Nobuyuki Anzai (Flame of Recca), which ran in Shonen Sunday from May 2003 to July 2006 with 15 volumes. In 2006, a sequel series titled MAR Omega began in Shonen Sunday, but was written and illustrated by Koichiro Hoshino (Popcorn Avatar). It was canceled with about 38 chapters.

An anime adaption ran in Japan on TV Tokyo from April 2005 to March 2007 with 102 episodes. It was animated by SynergySP (Pichi Pichi Pitch) and directed by Masaharu Okuwaki (Go! Wrestler Gundan, Mermaid Forest). It was also adapted into various video games.

In North America, both the manga and anime series are licensed by Viz Media. MAR Omega has yet to be licensed. The MAR anime aired on Cartoon Network’s Toonami block in 2007, but was removed after only a few months. Viz never finished dubbing the anime, so this will be the first time ever where fans can watch the whole series legally.
